      ODB Financial Mentors

Financial Literacy

Our Daily Bread provides two programs that will increase clients' skills and knowledge regarding household budgeting.

Budgeting Class

Free, one time classes are offered to clients interested in learning about household budgeting and credit reports.  Classes last 1 1/2 hours and are held on a monthly basis throughout Fairfax County.  Please see schedule below.  While a referral is not necessary, we ask clients to RSVP to our office specifying which class they plan to attend.  Classes are open to the public.

Financial Mentoring Program

Our Daily Bread pairs up clients in our other programs with volunteers who have the time and desire to help them better manage their lives. We also take referrals from social workers in Fairfax County.  The focus is generally aimed at managing household finances, with the mentor teaching different tips and skills. This program is also geared toward giving our clients a sense of control.  With an improved grasp on their finances, our clients should feel greater control in their lives and be more able to sustain self sufficiency.

As a prerequisite to the Financial Mentoring Program, clients must attend an ODB sponsored Budget Class.  Social Workers are asked to submit a referral. ODB will track the referral.  Once the client has attended a class and expressed interest in further assistance in developing budgeting skills, ODB will match the client with a mentor.

We ask that mentors and clients commit to meeting twice a month, for one hour, for six months or longer. We match mentors and clients with similar work schedules and living/working locations. Mentors usually have had a reasonable success with their personal finances, a desire to teach clients new skills without being condescending, but with patience and a sense of humor. Speaking Spanish or another language is in high demand.  Training and on-going support are provided.

This is the most demanding type of volunteer work, but also the most rewarding!

If you would like to participate in this program please contact Lisa Kazden
